IDEA ACADEMIA is one of the English academies in IDEA English Network, in Cebu. It is located on the 16th floor of GAGFA Tower in the heart of Cebu. IDEA Academia moved to this building in the beginning of 2016. There are cafes, restaurants, pharmacies, stores inside the building located in a convenient traveling area in Cebu.

IDEA Academia is flexible in its courses. Students can choose to study in private classes (1:1) of General English from 4-8 lessons per day. IDEA Academia also offers Business English courses and Exam Intensive for students who want to improve their English skills and prepare for TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS.

In 2019, IDEA Academia have opened a new program called Intensive Task Based Learning (TBL). There are 2 students and 1 instructor per class, manage the lesson by creating or assigning works to students. Students will practice self-learning, gain knowledge, working and exchanging ideas with others which also includes Teachers of English, or English language skills teaching course and CELTA : Cambridge English Language Assessment.

English Teaching Methods

IDEA Academia applied various forms of Communicative Method teaching which also includes Direct Approach where instructors introduce grammatical rules or new vocabularies along with examples of how to use them, and Task-based Language Training in which students must work specifically to use English as planned.

Besides, IDEA Academia uses PREP and Active Listening to teach as well.

PREP : Point > Reason > Evidence > Point used to practice speaking with logic and reason. PREP is a structure and method of communication used to convince others which is arranged appropriately according to the order of ideas, namely 1) purpose of communication 2) expression of reasons 3) rational support with examples or evidences 4) summarizing.

Active Listening with RRR : Repeat > React > Reply is the practice of active listening. Students will practice listening, communicate, review, reflect their understanding and ask questions or give comments.

Instructor Selection and Training System

The selection and training of instructors are divided into 5 steps for them to develop teaching and classroom management skills.

In addition, the academy’s instructors receive continuous training to improve skills for teaching. The training includes 1) training and weekly meetings 2) intensive training at monthly workshops 3) training by institutions that are internationally certified, such as TESOL ASIA and Callan, and monthly test, such as TOEIC, IELTS.

IDEA Academia Course Format

Learning English in Cebu with IDEA Academia can be divided into 4 parts:

1.Man to Man (1:1) Class

To increase learning time and practice English through speaking by decreasing the time instructors speak. Students will study 1:1 with the instructor for 3-8 sessions per day, 50 minutes per session. In a 1:1 class, students will speak and practice the language 80% of the class, and 20% will be taught by instructors.

2. One to Two (1:2) Class

Learning through activities. Students will receive tasks in class and must use English to complete the assigned task. Each tasks will support students’ development in English language skills.

3. Small Group Class

Learn in a small group with no more than 8 people. Students will use what they have learned from 1:1 class in this class. Students will not only interact with instructors but also with friends. In class activities include discussion, role-playing, debate, presentation and recitation.

3. Big Group Class

Learn in a big group with no more than 30 people. Students can choose activities such as, Yoga, Zumba, Dance and Practice for example, TOEIC, Survival English, Business Presentation.

3. Optional Group Class

IDEA Academia offers sessions that do not require students to come to class. Each group consists of no more than 8 students. There will be Voca Enhancement for students to choose in the morning session because the academy wants students to start a new day with vocabulary practicing. Other Optional Classes are Grammar Review for Beginners, Theatre for Intermediate and Advanced, American Accent and Toast Master’s Club to practice English through meetings and speech.

1. ESL (English as a Second Language) : Learn English for general use

Students can choose the intensity and various courses to answer to their own needs, such as Speaking, Reading, Writing, Pronunciation and Vocabulary. This program have been designed for students who would like to improve their English language skills within a short period of time. This program will help students use English fluently, accurately and have more confidence. IDEA ACADEMIA offers 2 kinds of ESL including :

1- Value ESL :

Affordable package 990 USD (application and other fees are not included) 3 private lessons, 1 small group, 1 large group, 1 morning session of Optional Class, 1 afternoon session of Optional Class, 2 evening sessions of Optional Class, 9 lessons or 7.17 hours per day.

2- General English (GE) :

Begin with 4 private lessons, 1 small group, 1 large group, 1 morning session of Optional Class, 1 afternoon session of Optional Class, 2 evening sessions of Optional Class, in total 10 lessons or 8 hours per day. *Students can add private class up to 8 lessons per day with additional costs.

2. Intensive TBL ESL Program : Take Based Lesson

A new program with an additional 1:2 (TBL) Task Based Learning [2 students : 1 instructor]. A learning management by creating or assigning tasks to students is another form of learning that taught students to practice self-learning. Students will gain knowledge, learn working skills and exchange ideas with others. They will be assigned tasks during class and will have to use English to complete them. Each tasks will support students’ development in English language skills.

TBL Program consisted of 3 private lessons, 2 TBL (2:1) sessions, 1 small group, 1 big group, 1 morning session of Optional Class, 1 afternoon session of Optional Class, 2 evening sessions of Optional class, in total 11 lessons or 8.83 hours per day.

3. Exam Intensive Program

Includes IELTS Intensive, TOEIC Intensive and TOEFL Intensive for students who would like to improve their English language skills and prepare for IELTS, TOEIC or TOEFL exam.

1- IELTS Intensive :

This program is designed for students who have scores equivalent to CEFR A2, and students who want study or work in English-speaking countries. The program will enable students to have better IELTS score to receive more educational and working opportunities from English using universities and companies around the world.

IELTS Intensive consisted of 4 private lessons, 1 small group, 1 big group, 1 morning session of Optional Class, 1 afternoon session of Optional Class, 2 evening sessions of Optional class, in total 11 lessons or 8.83 hours per day.

For IELTS Program, students will take mock exams weekly to test their developments, abilities and weaknesses.

2- TOEIC Intensive :

This program is designed for students who have scores equivalent to CEFR A2, and want to stand out in academic competitions or being professional.

TOEIC Intensive consisted of 4 private lessons, 1 small group, 2 big group, 1 morning session of Optional Class, 1 afternoon session of Optional Class, 2 evening sessions of Optional class, in total 11 lessons or 8.83 hours per day.

3- TOEFL Intensive :

This program is designed for students who have scores equivalent to CEFR A2, and want to have an advantage in education, migration and working in English-speaking countries. This course will give students better TOEFL score, improve academic skills and understand university level English.

TOEFL Intensive consisted of 4 private lessons, 1 small group, 2 big group, 1 morning session of Optional Class, 1 afternoon session of Optional Class, 2 evening sessions of Optional class, in total 11 lessons or 8.83 hours per day.

4. Business English : English language for business or work

This program is designed for students who have scores equivalent to CEFR B1 and those who want to improve English skills for business to apply it to work around the world. The program includes Business Writing & Vocabulary, Business Listening and Presentation. This program will help develop speaking, listening, reading, writing skills, grammar accuracy, cross-culture business communication and professional situations.

BIZ English :

Consisted of 4 private lessons, 1 small group, 1 big group, 1 morning session of Optional Class, 1 afternoon session of Optional Class, 2 evening sessions of Optional class, in total 10 lessons or 8 hours per day.

5. Teachers of English : English teaching skills training program

This program is designed for learners who have scores equivalent to CEFR B1 and those who want to develop English teaching skills for students of all ages. This program will help learners specialize in classroom management techniques and time management. They will learn backgrounds of language learning and will be trained effectively in teaching.

English teaching skills training program at IDEA Academia consists of 5 private lessons, 1 small group, 1 big group, 1 morning session of Optional Class, 1 afternoon session of Optional Class, 2 evening sessions of Optional class, in total 11 lessons or 8.83 hours per day. Courses include Speaking & Pronunciation, Reading & Writing, Grammar & Vocabulary, Background to Language Learning, Background to Language Teaching, Learning Strategies, Lesson Planning and Classroom Management, Grammar for Communication, Discussion, Debate, Active Listening, Role Play, Teaching Practice and more.

6. CELTA Program : Cambridge English Language Assessment

IDEA ACADEMIA is the only institution in the Philippines to have a CELTA center certified by Cambridge University ESOL. This program is designed for learners with scores equivalent to CEFR C2 and learners who want to improve adult teaching skills. This program will make learners become familiar with quality teaching, learn adult English teaching skills and apply them is class.

Interview

To be certified, students must:

Participate in 120 hours of class (20 days, 6 hours per day)
Have 6 training hours
Observe teaching by experienced instructors for 6 hours
Submit 4 written articles
Create and submit your own portfolio

Optional Group Class Details

Morning

Voca Enhancement : learn vocabularies that must be used in lessons. Students will practice listening, speaking, reading, pronunciation which will prepare them before starting each day’s class, similar to Brain training.

Afternoon

American Accent : practice pronouncing like a native speaker
Health Activities : Monday – Thursday : Yoga

Evening

Grammar Review : revision of learned grammar and practice using them in related situations
Toast Mater’s Club : practice public speaking, such as practice speech or role-play in front of classmates, and debate.
Theater Arts : practice confidence by using English as a medium in various kinds of acting for example acting according to scenes from movies, singing, dancing.
Job Interview : practice answering job interview questions in English
Health Activities : each day has different activities [Monday : Yoga, Tuesday : Zumba, Wednesday : Yoga, Thursday : Zumba]

Housing

Students can choose :

Standard Dormitory single bedroom, double bedroom
Sarrosa Hotel single bedroom, double bedroom and rooms with 4 beds. Each room will be furnished with beds, closet, safe, study table, air conditioner and private bathroom.
Superior Dormitory on the 4th floor of a department store, close to IDEA Cebu dormitory (rooms with 3 and 4 beds).
